Tunnel Vision provides the VirtualPrivateNetwork? (VPN) support in the NetIntegrator. We also thought it would be useful on its own, so we are releasing it for free under the terms of the GNU LesserGeneralPublicLicense, or LGPL.

What is it?

TunnelVision creates an encrypted VirtualPrivateNetwork?, or VPN, between two Tunnel Vision-capable sites on the Internet. Realistically, that means sites with a Linux server running TunnelVision or with a WorldvisionsWeaver? or NetIntegrator acting as their Internet gateway.

TunnelVision requires a Linux 2.2.x kernel or later in order to run. We're sorry about that, but we wanted to use the new features.

There is lots more information in the files listed below:

Anonymous@67.41.140.113 (2003/06/16): So is a new version ever going to be released? The ethertap module is not going to be supported for much longer. I can't remember if 2.5 still has it or not, if so then 2.7 will definatly not have it.

  • ppatters (2003/06/23): We are working on a new version of TunnelVision that uses /dev/tun, and that will be OpenSource. It will probably be a bit though...

jlebensold@24.202.161.12 (2003/07/15): As a Net-integration partner, i was told to refer to the mailing lists regarding a newer version of the tunnel vision daemon. I would love to be able to experiment with the protocol on non-NIOS systems, and i would have thought that it would be in tunnel vision's best interests to make the project more known to the rest of the opensource community (i.e why isn't there a sourceforge page?)

  • ppatters (2003/07/28): The latest open source release is 1.0 - and the reason that there isn't a SourceForge? page is that this page exists. SourceForge? doesn't offer us any more visibility (and probably less) than being on the same site as WvDial (which is linked from more places than are convenient to count :)

steve1@69.33.62.210 (2003/10/16): Are your running TunnelVision on SuSE 8.1 Linux kernel 2.4.19 or SuSE 8.2 Linux kernel 2.4.20

  • ppatters (2003/10/16): TunnelVision should work on just about any Distribution if you follow the instructions in the TunnelVisionReadMe. I don't know of any pre-packaged .RPM for SuSE though, and it might involve recompiling your kernel with support for /dev/tap (instructions are in the TunnelVisionReadMe).

Anonymous@64.53.217.147 (2004/04/08): According to http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=tunnelv;printalldeps=1 tunnelv is being removed from Debian testing on 8 April 04. Why? The version in sid is the same version number, or it just be replaced with a version compiled against a newer version of libc?

  • ppatters (2004/04/09): Good question - I'll have a chat with the Debian maintainer, and see what's up.

What is the current status of that new version? TIA
